Other Site Characteristics

Meandros abandonados ("galachos") del río Ebro, en la zona central de la depresión, producto del típico modelado de los ríos meandriformes que divagan sobre la llanura aluvial, con fuertes oscilaciones de caudal y de carga. Testimonio de un proceso atenuado por la creciente regulación de los ríos y cuya evolución supondría la colmatación y desaparición de los mismos. Además de los aportes debidos a episodios excepcionales de crecida, los galachos reciben también el aporte del acuífero aluvial del Ebro.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ecosistemas de ribera donde destacan los sotos y zonas húmedas por albergar una importante colonia de garzas y concentraciones invernales de anátidas y paseriformes. Declarado Reserva Natural en 1991, su interés para la conservación de las aves (especialmente Nycticorax nycticorax) llevó a su proposición y declaración como ZEPA. Además constituye una estación modélica para el estudio del dinamismo de la vegetación asentada sobre un medio sometido a fuertes fluctuaciones de carácter periódico.
