Other Site Characteristics

Espacio situado al sur de la provincia de Zamora, en una zona ligeramente elevada. Se asienta sobre parte de la antigua Dehesa del Cubeto, en el monte de Valparaíso, un bosque adehesado de quejigos y encinas, de relieve suavemente ondulado y surcado por varios cauces estacionales en los valles. Ubicado en el extremo occidental de la cuenca Terciaria del Duero, cerca de su contacto con el Macizo Hespérico; los materiales predominantes son lutitas, areniscas (arcosas, subarcosas, litarenitas y sublitarenitas) y conglomerados (predominan los cantos de cuarzo y cuarcita), además de limos y arcillas, todos ellos Paleógenos. El paisaje vegetal está dominado por formaciones de encinas y quejigos, generalmente en masas mixtas, tanto en masas boscosas (la mayoría muy poco maduras) como transformadas en dehesas, destacando la presencia de Quercus faginea subsp. broteroi que tiene escasas representaciones en el territorio Castellano-Leonés. De modo puntual en las vaguadas más húmedas se desarrollan bosques mixtos de fresnos (Fraxinus angustifolia) con quejigos, melojos, encinas, etc. Son abundantes también los matorrales de sustitución, principalmente jarales.

4.2 Quality and importance

El principal valor del Espacio lo constituyen las formaciones de bosque mediterráneo de quejigos (9240) y encinas (9340) en muchos casos formando masas mixtas, destacando la presencia de Quercus faginea ssp. broteroi (un elemento forestal bastante notable y original dentro del contexto de la región ya que sus requerimientos edáficos y climáticos condicionan su área de distribución, que en Castilla y León se circunscribe a zonas puntuales de las provincias de Salamanca y Zamora). Resulta significativa asimismo la presencia de algunas especies de interés comunitario como el coleóptero saproxílico Cerambyx cerdo.
