Other Site Characteristics

Las lagunas de Ruidera son una sucesión de 15 lagunas con orientación SE-NW situadas a lo largo del cursos superior del alto Guadiana. Su formación es consecuencia de la represa de las aguas por parte de las barreras naturales de toba que existen a lo largo del río Guadiana. El conjunto de las lagunas se localiza en el valle del denominado Alto Guadiana, labrado en las calizas del páramo del Campo de Montiel. Este páramo, en la parte incluida en el LIC, está mayoritariamente cubierto de encinares y encinar-sabinar, romerales y tomillares. Únicamente algunas antiguas roturaciones han dado lugar a las actuales superficies cultivadas.

4.2 Quality and importance

Las lagunas de Ruidera constituyen un humedal de gran interés limnológico, geomorfológico y florístico. Su originalidad se debe a varios motivos: - el origen de sus lagunas, ya que estas se originaron como consecuencia de la detención de las aguas por las represas naturales de toba formadas por la precipitación de los carbonatos disueltos en el agua. - abundancia de especies vegetales y animales. - calidad de los paisajes lacustres en contraposición con la zona relativamente árida en la que se encuentra. En su conjunto, el lugar está cubierto por apreciables extensiones de encinar (Quercetum rotundifoliae) y encinar-sabinar supramediterráneo continental (Junipero thuriferae-Quercetum rotundifoliae), contando con alguna representación de sabinar albar puro (Juniperetum hemisphaerico-thuriferae). En algunas áreas el bosque inicial se encuentra adehesado permitiendo un uso agropecuario. De entre los matorrales, abundantes en el lugar, destacan los retamares (Genisto scorpii-Retametum sphaerocarpae), que ocupan las áreas mesomediterráneas de suelo profundo, y los coscojares, con más o menos enebros (Rhamno lycioidis-quercetum cocciferae). Mayor degradación da lugar a romerales (Cisto clusii-Rosmarinetum) y salvio-esplegares (Lino differentis-Salvietum lavandulifoliae). En la subárea conformada por la Salina de Pinilla aparecen diversas comunidades halófilas de gran interés por su aislamiento de otras localidades similares (Ruppion maritimae, Salicornion patulae, Elymo curvifolii-Juncetum maritimi, Salsolo vermiculatae-Atriplicetum halimi, Limonietum latibracteati)

Tras la ampliación de este lugar del año 2000, llega a juntarse con la ZEPA del Campo de Montiel. Al tener considerablemente mayor superficie en la provincia de albacete, se anula el código NATURA 2000 ES4220010 y se renumera con el nuevo código ES4210017.
