Other Site Characteristics

Sierra ubicada en el límite oriental de la Comarca de los Montes de Ciudad Real, en su transición a la Comarca del Campo de Calatrava. Conjunto de serratas cuarcíticasde la Era primaria, muy quebradas y dislocadas, articuladas en pequeños cordales, con orientación noreste-suroeste. Como recursos geomorfológicos singulares, definidores del paisaje, destacan las crestas talladas en cuarcitas masivas, de gran dureza, y los derrubios o coluviones del Cuaternario, en ls laderas de la sierra, que originan las pedrizas.

4.2 Quality and importance

Macizo central de la Sierra de Santa María y sus estribaciones, con formaciones de matorral de quercíneas y "mancha" bien conservadas en sus laderas. Esta zona reviste un gran interés para la conservación, al sustentar una población reproductora de Lince ibérico asentada en las Sierras de Picón y Montes del Guadiana, localizada entre las poblaciones situadas en los Montes de Toledo (al norte) y en Sierra Morena (al sur) y comunicada con ellas a través de pasillos o corredores ecológicos, actuando como nexo de unión entre ambas, lo que le confiere una especial importancia desde el punto de vista de la viabilidad de esta especie. Se incluye en este lugar el tramo final del Río Bullaque, con formaciones de vegetación riparia (fresnedas, saucedas, etc.) de gran valor e importantes poblaciones de nutria, galápago europeo y diversas especies de ciprínidos de interés.
