Conjunto de turberas ácidas localizadas en laderas y pequeños barrancos de la Comarca de los Montes del Guadiana. Estos montes presentan un característico relieve "apalachense", con crestas talladas sobre cuarcitas y pizarras, y pedrizas resultado de la gelifracción, en sus laderas. Estas turberas ácidas o bonales se localizan asociadas a cerros y sierras paleozoicas, en zonas de contacto del zócalo con la "raña", o asociados a barrancos excavados en la "raña".

4.2 Quality and importance

Conjunto de turberas ácidas, denominados "bonales", ubicados en la Comarca de los Montes del Guadiana (términos municipales de Piedrabuena, Puebla de Don Rodrigo, Arroba y Fontanarejo, en el sector occidental de la provincia de Ciudad Real). Los bonales incluidos suponen la representación de las turberas ácidas mejor conservadas existentes en esta zona, estando incluidoslos tres tipos generales de turberas o zonas húmedas sobre suelos silíceos, que se distinguen en esta zona: bonales asociados a cerros y sierras paleozoicas, bonales situados en zonas de contacto del zócalo con la raña y bonales asociados a barrancos excavados en rañas. Su principal valor proviene de la riqueza floríastica que sustentan, estando representadas en estos 14 bonales un total de 16 especies protegidas por el Catálogo Regional de Especies Amenazadas de castilla-La Mancha, tratándose de especies singulares y endémicas, localizadas en hábitats muy restringidos y frágiles. Se trata de ecosistemas únicos que albergan hábitats exclusivos, tales como los brezales higrófilos de Erica tetralix y las comunidades de esfagnos. Por otro lado, algunos bonales contienen abombamientos turbosos o "mamelones", que constituyen formaciones de gran interés geomorfológico y botánico. Se trata de enclaves de gran singularidad, con un enorme valor, no sólo botánico, sino también paisajístico, científico y pedagógico que, por su alta fragilidad, requieren estrictas medidas de conservación y protección.

La Consejería de Agricultura y Medio Ambiente desarrolla un programa de conservación de flora amenazada, en el que se incluyen actuaciones para la conservación de la flora de las turberas ácidas, considerados hábitats de especial protección por la Ley 9/1999, de 26 de mayo, de Conservación de la Naturaleza de Castilla-La Mancha.
