Other Site Characteristics

Complejo lagunar ligado al río San Martín conformado por más de treinta lagunas, unas permanentes y otras estacionales, de aguas duras, sulfatadas, derivadas de la existencia de un karst actualmente activo en el estrato subyacente de yesos terciarios, de gran originalidad geomorfológica y limnológica. El relieve del entorno es ondulado, y ocupado mayoritariamente por cultivos agrícolas.

4.2 Quality and importance

En las lagunas permanentes de este complejo lagunar, son destacables los tapices de carófitos, excelentemente desarrollados (Charetum asperae, Magnocharetum hispidae), así como la presencia de pequeños masegares (Cladietum marisci). En el apartado 3.3. se citan las especies acuáticas más significativas de este humedal, destacando el número de especies y variedades de Caráceas). En las lagunas permanentes existe una población densa y bien conservada de bermejuela (Rutilus arcasii), y nidificando en la zona el martín pescador (Alcedo atthis). Las especies de aves acuáticas más habituales en estas lagunas son ánade real (Anas platyrhynchos), zampullín chico (Tachybaptus ruficollis), polla de agua (Gallinula chloropus), rascón (Rallus aquaticus), buitrón (Cisticola jundicis), carriceros (Acrocephalus sp.), ruiseñor bastardo (Cettia cetti) y lavanderas (Motacilla sp.). Entre las lagunas existen importantes extensiones de juncales dulces (Cirsio-Holoschoenetum) y subsalinos (Soncho crassifolii-Juncetum maritimae, Schoeno nigricantis-Plantaginetum maritimae), así como lastonares (Elymo hispidi-Brachypodietum phoenicoidis) y gramadales (Trifolio-Cynodontetum), en parte ocupados por cultivos agrícolas, de sencilla recuperación.
