El espacio está configurado a lo largo del valle del río Júcar, que llega a conformar hoces en una parte de su recorrido.

4.2 Quality and importance

Este tramo del río Júcar ha recuperado un apreciable estado de conservación tras la puesta en funcionamiento de la depuradora de aguas residuales de la ciudad de Cuenca, y contiene recursos de interés de cara a la aplicación de la Directiva Hábitat, tales como poblaciones abundantes de la especie introducida (no nativa de la cuenca del Júcar) Chondrostoma polylepis, Cobitis maroccana (C. taenia de la Directiva) y Rutilus arcasii, así como Lutra lutra y vegetación en galería con álamo blanco y sauce blanco. En su parte central tiene de interés una pequeña hoz donde nidifican sendas parejas de Hieraaetus fasciatus, Neophron percnopterus, Bubo bubo y Falco peregrinus. El valor histórico de este tramo para la conservación de la fauna ciprinícola quedó de manifiesto con su inclusión en la relación de tramos que el Estado Español propuso a la Comisión Europea en cumplimiento de otra Directiva de calidad de las aguas (Directiva 78/659/CEE), como "apto para la vida de los peces", si bien desde entonces la población de Chondrostoma toxostoma que albergaba parece haberse extinguido por competencia con la introducida Chondrostoma polylepis.

Este lugar albergó hasta la década de los 80, una población de Chondrostoma toxostoma. Sin embargo, debido al efecto del acueducto Tajo-Segura, en el tramo se introdujo artificialmente la especie competidora Chondrostoma polylepis, que la ha desplazado hasta el punto de que en los últimos diez años no ha podido ser localizado ningún ejemplar vivo de Chondrostoma toxostoma.
