Other Site Characteristics

Este espacio se articula en torno a la Sierra de Caldereros, que se eleva sobre la paramera ibérica circundante. La cubierta vegetal del área es propia de sustratos silíceos; xomo formaciones vegetales más extendidas destacan los rebollares y las repoblaciones artificiales pinares de pino rodeno (Pinus pinaster), acompañadas por matorrales de Cistus laurifolius y brezales de Calluna vulgaris.

4.2 Quality and importance

Esta sierra, que constituye un importante resalte en el paisaje, posee singulares formaciones pétreas labrados en areniscas, que conforman ciudades encantadas. Por su carácter silíceo, suponen una singularidad en el ámbito predominantemente calcáreo que domina en el Sistema Ibérico. Esta circunstancia ha permitido la existencia de una vegetación de óptimo carpetano-ibérico-leonés, lo que supone una importante disyunción biogeográfica. Los rebollares (Luzulo forsteri-Quercetum pyrenaicae) de esta zona son una importante singularidad, ya que son unos de los rebollares más orientales de Castilla-La Mancha y de la península ibérica, donde aparece un cortejo florístico propio de territorios más noroccidentales. Son igualmente dignos de mención algunos fragmentos finícolas de cervunal. También destaca, en la ribera del barranco de la fuente del Hocino, un bosquete de Populus tremula. En los escarpes silíceos de las areniscas y conglomerados Buntsandstein aparecen comunidades rupícolas silicícolas, especialmente desarrolladas en los enclaves umbrosos y húmedos. En la composición florística de estas comunidades dominan los helechos fisurícolas. Dentro de la comunidad faunística, destacar la importancia de la zona para las rapaces, tales como águila real (Aquila chrysaetos), alimoche (Neophron pernopterus), halcón peregrino (Falco pereguinus) y buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus). La chova piquirroja (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), también tiene una representación considerable en toda la sierra.
