Other Site Characteristics

La cabecera del río Ruecas es uno de los escasos tramos fluviales de la Cuenca del Guadiana que nace a gran altitud, en el Pico Villuercas (1600 m. s. n. m.), para descender bruscamente hacia la localidad de Cañamero después de ser regulado en el Embalse de Cancho del Fresno. Posteriormente rodea la Sierra del Pimpollar, discurriendo suavemente hasta la cola del Embalse del Ruecas a la altura de Logrosán. Limita con el Espacio Red Natura 2000 ZEPA-LIC "Sierra de las Villuercas y valle de Guadarranque". Su hábitat tradicional lo forman robledales con casi el 10% del espacio ocupado.

4.2 Quality and importance

Un total de 24 elementos referidos en la Directiva se encuentran representados en dicho enclave. De ellos 8 son hábitats y 16 se corresponden con taxones del Anexo II. Destaca la presencia de bosques de castaños acompañando a los hábitats riparios, incluyendo estos últimos Bosques aluviales residuales y Bosques de galería de Salix alba y Populus alba. Los taxones están representados por Lutra lutra y el grupo de los quirópteros, Mauremys leprosa además de Lacerta screiberi, así como las cinco especies piscícolas Chondrostoma willkommi, Rutilus alburnoides, Cobitis paludica, Barbus comiza y Rutilus lemmingii.
