Other Site Characteristics

La Serreta es una pequeña alineación montañosa que actua de límite natural entre el contexto volcánico de la sierra de Cabo de Gata y el ámbito sedimentario de la cuenca de Almería. De excepcional valor geológico representa un hito que propicia la interpretación y análisis de la evolución de la línea de costa. Cuenta con una litológia variada (materiales volcánicos, calizas, yesos, antiguas playas y rellenos sedimentarios) que favorecen el desarrollo de una importante diversidad florística asociada a los diferentes sustratos.

4.2 Quality and importance

Lugar importante para hábitats de interés comunitario de la Directiva 92/43/CEE, especialmente para los que se desarrollan en ecosistemas semiáridos o predesérticos sobre gran variedad de sustratos, ricos en cal, yesos o sales como son los HIC prioritarios 5220*, 1520* y 1510*. También es una zona de importancia para las aves esteparias, estando dentro del ámbito de actuación del plan de recuperación y conservación de estas aves a nivel andaluz como una zona de distribución de Circus pygargus, Chersophilus duponti, Pterocles orientalis y Tetrax tetrax.
