Other Site Characteristics

La ZEC Barrancos del Río Retortillo se localiza en el ámbito de Sierra Morena Occidental. El relieve dominante son valles encajados, barrancos, colinas a piedemonte y sierras sobre rocas metamórficas, intrusivas o pizarras, esquistos y filitas, y que determina los hábitats que se desarrollan en el espacio; coincidiendo las zonas más bajas con el fondo del barranco por donde discurre el río Retortillo, en dirección de norte a sur. Abarca desde el embalse del Retortillo, incluyendo el embalse de regulación, hasta unos 5,5 km en dirección sur.

4.2 Quality and importance

La ZEC Barrancos del Río Retortillo desempeña un papel relevante en la conectividad como corredor ecológico entre espacios Red Natura 2000 en Andalucía, debido a la continuidad física y territorial existente entre dicha ZEC y las ZEC y ZEPAS Sierra Norte y Sierra de Hornachuelos. De esta manera contribuye a la existencia de un pasillo ecológico a través de toda la Sierra Morena andaluza, desde la provincia de Huelva hasta la de Jaén, pasando por Sevilla y Córdoba y así dar coherencia a la Red Natura 2000. A su vez, este espacio complementa a la ZEC Sierra de Hornachuelos para el lince ibérico (Lynx pardinus), aunque en la actualidad no se tiene constancia de su presencia.
