Other Site Characteristics

El espacio se compone de un complejo lacustre de origen artificial por extracción de arenas, rodeado de dunas estabilizadas con vegetación naturalizada tras su restauración. Este espacio ha quedado confinado entre la franja portuaria del Canal del Padre Santo en la desembocadura del estuario de los ríos Tinto y Odiel, y la carretera N-442 que comunica los núcleos de Huelva y Mazagón.

4.2 Quality and importance

El espacio cuenta con una posición estratégica como nexo de unión entre diferentes espacios Red Natura 2000 y posibilita la conexión ecológica de diversas especies propias de las lagunas costeras y dunas litorales entre el ámbito de Doñana y los humedales del litoral onubense. Estos dos ecosistemas quedan representados en el ámbito del espacio por hábitats de la Directiva 92/43/CEE. Los arenales costeros albergan una rica flora de gran singularidad y especificidad, destacando especies como Linaria tursica y Armeria velutina, incluidas en el Anexo II de la Directiva Hábitats.
