Other Site Characteristics

El espacio constituye el cauce y las riberas del río Piedras en su desembocadura en las aguas del golfo de Cádiz, formando parte del litoral occidental de la provincia de Huelva, caracterizado por ser una costa llana de arenas blancas.

4.2 Quality and importance

La importancia de este espacio reside principalmente en el hábitat estuarino (1130), que ocupa practicamente la totalidad del mismo. Asociado a este hábitat de interés comunitario se encuentran otros hábitats marinos y mareales como el 1110 (Bancos de arena cubiertos permanentemente por agua marina, poco profunda) y el 1140 (Llanos fangosos o arenosos que no están cubiertos de agua cuando hay marea baja). Sobre estos dos hábitats se distribuye la fanerógama marina Zostera noltii, que desarrolla una función ecológica muy importante en el ecositema, además de ser indicadora del buen estado ecológico de las aguas. El estuario es un ecosistema adecuado para el desarrollo de una rica ictiofauna proporcionando unos recursos tróficos fundamentales para aves marinas y costeras, como el águila pescadora, que presenta en esta ZEC un lugar de alimentación y campeo de gran interés, al igual que otros espacios cercanos de la costa onubense.
