Other Site Characteristics

La superficie de la ZEC se localiza principalmente en una zona adehesada donde predomina el pastizal y el acebuche. En realidad, la vegetación forma un mosaico de acebuchales de porte arbustivo con encinas en roquedo y chaparral, majadal o pastizal con pinos dispersos. Presenta un relieve escarpado. La cueva es de origen kárstico, de unos 350 m de longitud. Está formada por una serie de salas repartidas por toda la cueva. En la parte interna se localizan tres lagos con elevadas cúpulas, columnas de piedra de más de un metro de diámetro, estalactitas, estalagmitas y otras formaciones geológicas. Hay presencia de invertebrados en su interior.

4.2 Quality and importance

La importancia de la ZEC radica en la gran colonia de cría de quirópteros (murciélagos) cavernícolas que alberga la cueva donde comparten el espacio varias especies. Además de otras especies de murciélagos que hacen un uso ocasional del refugio sin generar colonias relevantes.

4.5 Documentation

Los censos poblacionales de quirópteros provienen de los datos recogidos en el Informe regional de murciélagos cavernícolas de Andalucía de 2011 (Consejería de Medio Ambiente, 2011), elaborado a partir de los datos obtenidos en el Programa de emergencias, control epidemiológico y seguimiento de fauna silvestre de Andalucía. En dicho seguimiento queda reflejado que las especies de murciélagos M. myotis y M. blythii se han considerado una misma población (1.310 indv), ya que en época de cría no se pueden diferenciar por ultrasonidos.
