Other Site Characteristics

Se sitúan junto al diapiro del mismo nombre, en una zona de monte de unos 600 m de altitud cubierto principalmente por espartizales y rodeado de cultivos de secano, sobre materiales volcánicos de final del Mioceno. Se trata de un conjunto de abrigos y galerias de minas abandonadas, con un interés mineralógico y petrológico excepcional, por la existencia de yacimientos fundamentalmente de esparraguina (variedad del apatito) y hematites, relacionados con las rocas volcánicas denominadas "Jumillitas".

4.2 Quality and importance

El interés faunístico de este enclave radica en la variedad de quirópteros que se refugian en las galerías de mina abandonadas, con 8 especies censadas hasta el momento, lo que supone el 53% del catálogo de la Región de Murcia. Destaca la presencia de Myotis blythii y Rinolophus ferrumequinum, incluidos en el Anexo II de la Directiva Hábitats.
