Other Site Characteristics

Los fondos de este estrecho están sometidos a grandes corrientes del sistema general y de corrientes de marea. Los fondos son someros, de arenas claras y con aguas de gran transparencia. Existen algunas formaciones rocosas erosivas de origen subaéreo de una gran belleza pasiajística. Estas configuran un importante hábitat y refugio a diversas especies de interés pesquero.

4.2 Quality and importance

En esta zona se encuentra un sebadal bien conservado, en la posición más septentrional del archipiélago, lo que condiciona sus características especiales en cuanto a la estructura y composición de la comunidad, ciclos biológicos, etc. Hay que tener en cuenta que las aguas del área son las más frías de las islas lo que le confiere un alto grado de singularidad. Por otro lado, existen formaciones geológicas submarinas de origen subaéreo de alto valor, además de la presencia de poblaciones de especies endémicas de Canarias o macaronesia, o especies de distribución restringida en Canarias. Su localización y extensión otorgan a este sebadal una gran importanmcia como área de reproducción y alevinaje de numerosas especies de peces y moluscos de interés pesquero. Destacar la presecnia de Tursiops truncatus.
