Other Site Characteristics

Una formación geológica erosiva en forma de barra (arrecife) semisumergida protege una playa arenosa. Estructura similares se repiten a unos 15 metrosa de profundidad originando un singular paisaje submarino.

4.2 Quality and importance

A pesar de su resttingida extensión, esta bahía no expuesta al oleaje y viento dominante, reúne una gran diversidad de biotopos, siendo un área que alberga una gran biodiversidad, con comunidades singulares y especies de algas e invertebrados de distribución restringida a esta zona, o con poblaciones de mayor relevancia en el lugar. La presencia de un arrecife semisumergido que protege una playa arenosa origina unas especiales condiciones ecológicas de aguas someras muy resguardadas únicas en Canarias. Los sebadales que ocupan la zona y, en especial, los del interior del área delimitada por el arrecife, son los únicos que aparecen en la zona norte de todo el archipiélago canario, lo que les confieren una elevada singularidad. Se trata además de una zona con una alta productividad y esporádicamente se puede observar la presencia de grupos de Tursiops truncatus que utilizan el área como zona de alimentación.
