Rimpineva - Matilanneva on hyvin vetinen aapa, joka on yksi Kainuun parhaita lintusoita (uhanalaista pesimälajistoa). Aapasuon lävistää luode-kaakkoissuunnassa laaja ylipääsemätön rimpineva-alue. Pohjoislaidalla on karuja kangas-, tupasvilla- ja tupasvillanevarämeitä sekä rahkamättäisiä lyhytkorsi- ja rimpinevoja. Eteläosassa on rahkamättäisiä lyhytkorsi- ja rimpinevoja, laiteilla pallosara- ja tupasvillarämeitä. Kohteeseen sisältyy myös erillinen metsähallituksen aarnialue Matilannevan länsipuolella.

Kaikki tietolomakkeen taulukoissa 3.1 ja 3.2 mainitut luontotyypit ja lajit (lukuun ottamatta edustavuudeltaan luokkaan D luokiteltuja luontotyyppejä ja populaation merkittävyyden osalta luokkaan D luokiteltuja lajeja) kuuluvat alueen suojeluperusteisiin ja kaikkien niiden suojelutavoitteena on vähintäänkin alueen merkityksen säilyttäminen osana verkostoa. Lisäksi alueen suojelussa ja hoidossa painotetaan seuraavia tavoitteita: Alueella vallitseva luontotyyppien ja lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään turvaamalla luonnon omien prosessien mukainen kehitys.

Rimpineva on valtakunnallisen soidensuojeluohjelman kohde, jonka rajausta on laajennettu kohteen länsipuoleisilla luonnontilaisilla suoalueilla tavoitteena aapasuoluonnon, erityisesti linnuston kannalta merkittävän kokonaisuuden suojelu. Länsipuoleinen erillinen osa-alue on Metsähallituksen aarnialuetta. Koko alueen suojelu on tarkoitus toteuttaa luonnonsuojelulain nojalla sekä luontodirektiiviin perustuen että lintudirektiivin mukaisena linnustonsuojelualueena.
