Other Site Characteristics

Localisé en versant sud de la Côte de l'Ile de France Site en bon état. Les carrières souterraines d'Avenay-Val-d'Or sont gérées par le Conservatoire des espaces naturels de Champagne Ardenne. Les groupements végétaux des pelouses, lisières, tendent à disparaitre en raison d'un embroussaillement progressif. Le maintien de la végétation actuelle des étangs passe par le respect des conditions actuelles d'oligotrophie (pas de fertilisants) et par le maintien d'un niveau variable nécessaire à la végétation des rives exondées.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le massif forestier de la Montagne de Reims, versant Sud, est un vaste ensemble forestier comprenant divers types de boisements : forêts acidiphiles, forêts neutrophiles, hêtraies thermophiles et ourlets associés. Ce dernier type, localisé aux versants Sud (adret), constitue l'élement le plus remarquable par la présence d'espèces rares et souvent protégées nationalement et régionalement. Les forêts et étangs possèdent une flore très diversifiée avec de nombreuses espèces d'Amphibiens, de Reptiles, d'Oiseaux et de Mammifères. Les carrières souterraines d'Avenay-Val-d'Or constituent un important réseau de galeries. Elles étaient exploitées autrefois pour le calcaire. C'est actuellement un site d'hivernage d'une importante colonie de Chiroptères dont six espèces rares et vulnérables. Il s'agit du deuxième site d'hivernage du département de la Marne. Présence également du karst de la Montagne de Reims avec notamment la rivière souterraine de Trépail.
