Other Site Characteristics

Le Warndt est une vaste dépression naturelle séparée du plateau lorrain par des collines de grès. Le plateau calcaire laisse donc place dans le Warndt à une cuvette gréseuse. Peu de menaces actuelles grâce à des mesures de conservation déjà prises.

4.2 Quality and importance

Site éclaté constitué de milieux souterrains : anciennes mines de plomb et de cuivre, anciennes carrières souterraines, tunnel ferroviaire désaffecté et ancien souterrain militaire.

Les actions déjà engagées sur le site : Une convention de protection a été établie entre la Commission Permanente d'Etude et de Protection des Eaux, du Sous-sol et des Cavernes (CPEPESCL) et la commune de Longeville-lès-Saint-Avold, propriétaire des mines du Castelberg et du Haut-Bois. Des travaux de mise en sécurité (fermeture des accès dangereux, consolidation d’anciennes galeries) ont déjà eu lieu à Longeville-lès-Saint-Avold. Dans le cadre d’un contrat Natura 2000, des aménagements complémentaires ont été réalisés pour les mines du Béring, du Castelberg, de la Grande Saule et du Haut-Bois, et sont prévus en 2008 pour deux autres gîtes à chiroptères. Le site de Longeville est une Réserve Naturelle Volontaire alors que celui de Saint-Avold est concerné par un Arrêté préfectoral de Protection de Biotope.
