Other Site Characteristics

Grand ensemble regroupant une vaste zone humide arrière-littorale provenant du comblement du golfe de Machecoul et de Challans après la transgression flandrienne ; baie marine renfermant des vasières à forte productivité, île et cordons dunaires. Une partie du littoral endigué au cours des derniers siècles a donné naissance à des systèmes de polders et de marais salants. Grand intérêt paysager de l'ensemble du site. En se basant sur les laisses des plus hautes mers indiquées sur les cartes IGN, le taux de surface marine du site est de 30%. Menaces sur la conservation du fait de la déprise agricole (difficultés économiques des systèmes d'élevage bovin extensifs) : des opérations locales agri-environnement sont en cours pour ralentir ce phénomène, limité cependant par la médiocre qualité des sols qui n'offrent que peu de possibilités d'intensification (à l'exception des élevages hors-sol). La forte pression touristique sur le littoral induit divers aménagements (routes, campings...) et une pression urbaine importante, particulièrement sur l'île de Noirmoutier et la frange littorale.

4.2 Quality and importance

L'ensemble de la zone présente un état de conservation très intéressant. L'intérêt mycologique est également à signaler. Présence de l'habitat OSPAR 'Bancs de Zostera' et ponctuellement de l'habitat OSPAR 'Récifs de Sabellaria spinosa'.
