Other Site Characteristics

Le site Natura 2000 des Palus de St Loubès et d’Izon est situé dans la plaine alluviale de la Dordogne. Cette situation géographique lui confère un relief particulièrement plat avec une altitude maximale ne dépassant pas les 4 mètres. Ces faibles variations altimétriques conditionnent le caractère inondable des marais. Les palus forment une bande tampon d’environ 500 mètres entre la Dordogne et la deuxième terrasse alluviale. Cette zone protégée par des digues, est constituée d’un réseau très dense de canaux (esteys) et de fossés de drainages. Ce dispositif complexe est néanmoins insuffisant pour mettre les secteurs les plus bas à l’abri des variations du niveau d’eau de la Dordogne. Les marais sont déconnectés du réseau hydrographique. Risque d'évolution des spéculations agricoles L’élevage extensif, activité agricole traditionnelle des palus permettant le maintien de surfaces de prairies humides, est aujourd’hui menacée et en déclin sur la rive gauche de la Dordogne. Les surfaces de marais ou de prairies humides se réduisent, effet provoqué notamment par la modification des pratiques agricoles (pratiques extensives remplacées par la céréaliculture), par la populiculture et par une urbanisation diffuse.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les Palus de Saint-Loubès et d’Izon sont particulièrement intéressants pour la nature tourbeuse de certaines zones, pour la durée de l’inondation sur une grande partie de la superficie et pour la mosaïque d’habitats naturels présente. Ces paramètres font de ces palus des zones refuges pour une flore et une faune peu commune en Gironde.
