Other Site Characteristics

Le site proposé est entièrement situé sur le flanc nord du massif du Canigou. Il comprend des pans de montagnes depuis les zones montagnardes jusqu'aux parties sommitales et des secteurs centrés autour de la partie supérieure de cours d'eau (notamment le Llech avec le Desman). Il inclut le territoire des deux réserves naturelles de Py et de Mantet. On peut noter des problèmes de fermeture de milieux ouverts (landes et pelouses) principalement dans les zones montagnardes et supraméditerranéennes. La fréquentation du public et la circulation par des véhicules (pistes et stationnement) entraînent localement des risques de dégradation des milieux naturels fragiles.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le massif du Canigou culmine à 2784 m. à l'extrémité orientale de la chaîne des Pyrénées. Sa position géographique et son altitude permettent un étagement de la végétation depuis les zones méditerranéennes (présence de formations de chênes verts) jusqu'aux niveaux alpins (éboulis, pelouses et landes, combes à neiges). Il recèle de nombreuses espèces endémiques pyrénéennes dont certaines atteignent leur limite orientale. Il présente une gamme variée d'habitats naturels d'intérêt communautaire liés à l'étagement de la végétation.
