Other Site Characteristics

Massif calcaire supra-jurassique, dressé sur un socle constitué par le plateau du Cengle. L'adret présente une succession d'escarpements rocheux alors que l'ubac, moins abrupt, se creuse de vallons profonds. La montagne Sainte-Victoire a fortement pâti de l'incendie de 1989. Elle subit actuellement une forte déprise agricole et pastorale (risque de fermeture des milieux ouverts) et fait l'objet d'une forte pression touristique.

4.2 Quality and importance

La montagne de la Sainte-Victoire est une limite biogéographique avec en adret une végétation mésoméditerranéenne (groupements de falaises et d'éboulis) et en ubac des groupements euroméditerranéens (landes à Genêt de Lobel). La flore, d'affinité orophile, présente des éléments rares pour la France. Les zones karstiques, les milieux ouverts et les vieilles forêts constituent un complexe d'habitats favorables aux chiroptères. Un vaste territoire forestier continu permet la prise en compte d'une entité fonctionnelle du plus grand intérêt. 1453 Arenaria provincialis : dernière observation dans les années 1970. Non retrouvée depuis, malgré des prospections ciblées en 2004 (inventaires DOCOB). Toutefois la présence sur le site de cette espèce endémique provençale reste fortement probable du fait de sa discrétion, de son caractère sporadique et du caractère escarpé de son habitat (éboulis), rendant sa prospection difficile. Recherches complémentaires en cours. Le DOCOB prévoit des mesures de gestion spécifiques à cette espèce.
