Other Site Characteristics

The site has a Mediterranean - middle European climate. Forests mainly consist of mixed stands of Fagus sp., Abies borisii-regis, Quercus sp. and Castanea sativa. There are also stands of Betula betula (Pangaio is the southern limit of this species in Balkan Peninsula).

4.2 Quality and importance

It is a large mountainous area with extensive beech and chestnut forests and pastures at higher altitude. In the rocky parts of the mountain there are cliffs with rare endemic plants or plants with restricted distribution in the Balkan peninsula. Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, 12 taxa are greek endemics (between them 3 are local endemics), two taxa are protected by the EC Environment Legislation (1992).Inula ensifolia, Rosa arvensis, Viola perinensis have motivation D since they are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list. Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Atropa bella - donna, Cephalanthera damasonium, Coeloglossum viride, Convallaria majalis, Dactylorhiza sambucina, Dianthus gracilis ssp. drenowskianus, Dianthus petraeus ssp. orbelicus, Gentiana asclepiadea, Gentiana cruciata, Lilium martagon, Orchis ustulata, Paronychia rechingeri, Saxifraga ferdinandi-coburgi have motivation D since they are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981), Satureja pilosa, Saxifraga juniperifolia ssp. sancta, Stachys recta ssp.recta, Valeriana officinalis ssp. collina, Valeriana tripteris have motivation D since they are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece. Abies borisii-regis, Achillea chrysocoma, Arabis bryoides, Asperula aristata ssp nestia, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Crocus veluchensis, Erysimum drenowskii, Gentianella bulgarica, Laserpitium siler ssp. laeve, Sideritis scardica, Silene balcanica, Silene radicosa ssp. radicosa, Silene waldsteinii, Viola grisebachiana have motivation D since they are are Balkan endemics and 2 taxa Thymus leucotrichus, Thymus thracicus have motivation D since they find their main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey. There have also been recorded 5 species of reptiles and 2 amphibians of Annex IV. Arkoudospilia Cave: This cave is home to at least six bat species of Annex II of the Directive 92/43 (1000 Miniopterus schreibersii, 1000 Myotis sp., 300 Rhinolophus blasii, 100 Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, 50 Rhinolophus euryale, 10 Rhinolophus hipposideros) and is one of the five most important bat colonies in Greece. Fish fauna: Extremely important distribution area of rare species Caspiomyzon hellenicus (falling in Eudontomyzon sp.) (Geiger et al. 2014). Important area due to the presence of ideal living habitats of juveniles of the species. At the same time, the canals of ponds Philippi host a relatively rich fish fauna - here has been identified and the equally rare endemic species Cobitis punctilineata. The area is also found and an extremely important and isolated population of the endemic Phoxinus strymonicus.
