Other Site Characteristics

Mt. Tzena belongs to the Axios zone and mainly consists of schists and limestone in contrast with the adjacent Voras Mt. which is mainly ophiolitic. Along with Pinovo it forms a mountain range with steep slopes and characteristic bare rock faces. More than 50% of the site is forest land and a relatively small percentage of it is grazing land. Accordingly, the main land use is forest management and secondarily stock raising.

4.2 Quality and importance

The alpine rock faces of Pinovo are very important for the chamois (a small population, the only one in the mountain range of Tzena, Pinovo and Voras) and raptors such as the Golden Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Lammergeir (staging), Booted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Lanner Falcon and Peregrine Falcon. In the lowlands there are well structured high forests of oak which form important feeding and nesting places for several species of woodpeckers: Grey Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker, Middle Spotted and Syrian Woodpecker. Inaccessible beech forests just below the treeline are also important for wildlife. The area has been, generally, well conserved because it is situated near the border and due to military importance most activities were until recently sustained.
