Other Site Characteristics

The geological substratum consists of metamorphic rocks (augen, gneisses, schists), acid igneous rocks (granites) and basic and ultrabasic rocks (ophiolites ruglueral). The site is covered in the major part with broad leaved and coniferous forests. The dominant species are Fagus sylvatica, Quercus frainetto, Pinus nigra var. pallasiana and Pinus sylvestris. Forests are interrupted by large gaps covered with shrubs and dry grasslands while, above the timberline there are subalpine grasslands.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is interesting mainly for the rare flora and fine quality black pine forests.Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Ranunculus fontanus, Rosa arvensis are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list. Dactylorhiza sambucina, Jovibarba heuffelii, Knautia magnifica (motivation D) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981). Achillea lingulata, Carlina acaulis ssp. simplex, Senecio subalpinus, Stellaria uliginosa(motivation D) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece. Achillea chrysocoma, Alchemilla serbica, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Cerastium rectum, Viola frondosa, Viola orphanidis (motivation D) are Balkan endemics. Geum coccineum, Silene parnassica (motivation D) find their main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey or Italy.
