Other Site Characteristics

The site is located at the SE part of the Kassandra peninsula. The coast is exposed to intensive wave action and the sea bed exhibits high inclination. Posidonia beds expand along the coastline (depth: 1.5-30 m). The substrate comprises gravel and small portion of granite rock. In the bay and shallow waters a limited population of Cymodocea nodosa exists (0.5-1 m depth). On the hard substrate Rhodophyceae dominate whereas the presence of Chlorophyceae species is very small. The site is located at the south part of the Kassandra peninsula from Pefkochori (SE) to Posidi (SW). This is a fully marine site that extends ~50 km along the coastline and 1.5 nm off. The coast is exposed to intensive wave action and the seabed exhibits high inclination. The total area spans about 160 km2 of seabed, at places exceeding depths of 200m.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is of great importance as Posidonia beds are very well developed. The marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica is a very good bioindicator of the ecological conditions of a marine environment. However the species is threatened with extinction in the Mediterranean Sea and especially in the most polluted areas (MCMC 1993), Motivation D. Moreover the area is very important for its great variety of Rhodophyceae (Laurencia obtusa, Peyssonnelia sp.) and particularly calcareous species (Corallina elongata, Lithophyllum sp.).Dense popoulation of the Echinoderma Paracentrotus lividus, which is referred to as a threatened species (IUCN 1988), exist in Posidonia meadows. Moreover some species of gastropods are referred to live on Posidonia leaves and Cystoseira thalli. The area is of great importance due to Posidonia beds (Habitat Type 1120) that are very well developed and cover the largest part of the infralittoral sediments at depths between 5-30m. The shallower and deeper zones are dominated by sands and detritic sands (Habitat Type 1110). Habitat Type 1170 (Sublittoral rocks and reefs) is also common and extensive, occasionally presenting facies of coralligenous assemblages at depths below ~35m.
