  • NP: in case that a habitat type no longer exists in the site enter: x (optional)
  • Cover: decimal values can be entered
  • Caves: for habitat types 8310, 8330 (caves) enter the number of caves if estimated surface is not available.
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation)

Other Site Characteristics

The area located in the SE part of the Sithonia peninsula and includes Platanitsi coasts, Sarti bay and Sykia bay, with steep coasts. In the area grow up Posidonia beds of both types namely shallow waters (2-15 m) and deeper down to 40 m. Sarti bay exhibits a rich flora and vegetation of photophilous and skiophilous macroalgae. Calcareous Rhodophycae and Cystoseira species form extensive zones in the sublittoral. The biotopes are exposed in intensive wave action.

4.2 Quality and importance

Flora and plant communities of the area exhibit a particular interest due to the high species diversity. Following previous studies for the area more than 50 macroalgal species has been reported and some of these have been reported for the first time in the marine flora of Aegean Sea. Posidonia beds are of great density and show a remarkable viability resulting to a great number of hosted organisms (plants and animals). Some gastropods are reported to live on Posidonia meadows among which the species Paradoris indecora is reffered for the first time in the Aegean Sea. Posidonia oceanica: the seagrass is included in the list of WCMC (1993)Paracentrotus lividus (invertebrate): threatened species (IUCN 1988)
