Other Site Characteristics

Two calcareous lakes between bare mountains. Important for birds of the wetland are the reed beds dominated by Phragmites australis, which are more extensive in Petron lake. Also, rooted submerged and floating vegetation (Potamogeton spp., Vallisneria spiralis, Najas marina, Myriophyllum spicatum, Polygonum amphibium etc.) occupy shallow waters. There is an area of archaeological interest near Petron lake.

4.2 Quality and importance

Though of reduced significance in recent years, it is still important as a breeding, feeding and resting ground for birds. It is also important for birds of prey. They have also been recorded six reptile species and one amphibian species of Annex IV, an amphibian species of Annex V and four other reptiles.
