Other Site Characteristics

Important for birds of the wetland are the reed beds, usually dominated by Phragmites australis, being significantly more extensive in lake Cheimaditis than Zazari. Also, rooted submerged and floating vegetation (Potamogeton spp., Ceratophyllum sp., Myriophyllum spicatum, Zannichelia palustris, Vallisneria sp., Nymphaea alba etc.) occupy shallow waters.

4.2 Quality and importance

A wetland supporting a diverse avifauna serves as a nesting, feeding and resting ground for a significant number of birds. It is also, very important for birds of prey and rich herpetofauna. Adequate riparian habitats for the Lycaena dispar listed in Annex II are available in the Natura 2000 site. They have also been recorded eleven reptile species of Annex IV , one amphibian species of Annex V.
