Other Site Characteristics

It is an extensive valley of the river Pineios with high cliffs, wooded slopes, riverine forest and maquis. The significant aesthetic forest with the natural fresh-water springs of the Agia Paraskevi, is situated between the mountains Olympos and Ossa. From a geological point of view this site consists of serpentine, gneiss, schists and carbonate rocks.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site comprises forests with great aesthetic and ecological value. There are a large number of water birds and populations of common fish species. In the present site occurs one greek endemic plant species. The site is moderately degraded due to human activities. However, it hosts suitable habitats (rivers with sandy and muddy substrate) for the freshwater species (Unio crassus) that was recorded there during the fieldwork. An endemic freshwater Endagered sp.
