Other Site Characteristics

The site consists of the two main branches of Pineios River, the riparian forests formed on its bank and the adjacent cultivations. It also includes the estuary with its riparian woodland, marshes, small freshwater lakes, sand dunes and the coastal zone.

4.2 Quality and importance

This area is very important for wetland species such as the Purple Heron, Little Bittern, Little Grebe, Coot, Mallard, Oystercatcher and Kingfisher that breed in significant numbers. It is also important for birds of prey like the Black Kite, Levant Sparrowhawk, Lesser Spotted Eagle that also nest in the area. Furthermore, species that prefer areas that combine agricultural with forest habitats, like the Black Stork, Roller and Bee-eater can also be found breeding in significant numbers. Finally, the area is also important during winter for visitors like the Black-throated Diver and the Sandwich Tern.
