Other Site Characteristics

The aquatic vegetation of the water basins and the ditches is composed of the plant communities assigned to the classes Lemnetea minoris, Ceratophylletea demersi and Potamogetonetea pectinati. The reed thickets present high diversity. They belong to the class Phragmitetea and are composed of the associations Phragmitetum australis and Scirpo-Phragmitetum. The zonal development of halophytic communities and wet meadows with Juncus sp. is very characteristic in some areas of the Kalamas Delta.

4.2 Quality and importance

This site is important for breeding, passage and overwintering waterbirds. The riparian stands have an important ecological role together with high historical and aesthetic value. The surrounding hills play a special ecological role in the structure and function of the conservation of the Kalamas wetland while the thickets of reed and tamarisk and the halophytic plant communities have special ecological characteristics.
