Other Site Characteristics

It is the second highest mountain in Greece, with high peaks and extensive grasslands and pasture in subalpine altitudes. In lower altitudes (1800-2100 m) the rock is serpentine.

4.2 Quality and importance

It is a very rich and highly diverse in forest habitats area, very important for some of the rarest mammals of Europe such as thebear and otter. There are some greek endemics with motivation D (Barbarea sicula, Centaurea pawlowskii, Narthecium scardicum, Pedicularis olympica, Soldanella pindicola) are included in the WCMC and/orEuropean Red Data list, other taxa (Acer heldreichii, Campanula hawkinsiana, Coeloglossum viride, Dactylorhiza sambucina,Gentiana asclepiadea, Gentiana cruciata, \ Jovibarba heuffelii, Lilium chalcedonicum, Lilium martagon, Orchis pallens, Poa thessala) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981), Trollius europaeus is rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece, some taxa (Abies borisii-regis, Achillea chrysocoma, Cirsium appendiculatum, Crocus veluchensis, Dianthus integer ssp. Minutiflorus, Gentianella bulgarica, Laserpitium siler ssp. Laeve, Minuartia baldaccii, Pinus heldreichii, Silene fabarioides, Silene parnassica, Viola albanica, Viola dukadjinica) are Balkan endemics and Thymus thracicus finds its main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey or Italy.
