Other Site Characteristics

The Acheron delta belongs to the lobate morphodynamic delta type and from a rheomorphological point of view it is considered to be a tectonic basin filled in with extensive layer of alluvial deposits carried by the river Acheron. The whole area of the estuary ecosystems is flat or with very low gradient. The plant communities present in the vegetation complex of the Acheron delta and its surrounding hills belong to the following types: Ammophilous-ammonitrophilous, vegetation of saltmarshes, freshwater and brackish marshes, riparian forests, aquatic, macchie and phrygana vegetation and deciduous oak forest remnants of Quercus ithaburensis ssp. macrolepis. Acheron delta is an heterogenous wetland with small-scale spatial variation, that constitutes a particularly suitable habitat for many vertebrate species (especially for birds, amphibians and mammals) as they often need more than one structural vegetation type for their various life functions. The area Stena of the Acherontas River is located at higher altitudes in relation to the coastal wetland of Acheron delta, and consists of calacreous rocks where macchie vegetation with the dominant species of Quercus coccifera, Phillyrea latifolia, etc., is predominant. In the vicinity of Acheron river, stands of Quercus ilex of excellent structure can be found. The chasmophytic vegetation which is composed of ecologically and phytogeographically interesting taxa, grows on calacreous rocks of high inclinations in the gorge, thus giving special ecological value to the studied site. The well-structured riparian vegetation is composed of the following dominant species: Platanus orientalis, Salix alba and Alnus glutinosa It has to be noted that Platanus orientalis stands are highly threatened by the introduction of the pathogen Ceratocystis fimbriata f.sp. platani, which has infected a large number of individuals especially near the settlement “Glyki”. At the higher altitudes of the site, stands of deciduous oaks occur (both 91M0 and 9350 habitat types) occur. Locally and near settlements they are degraded due to overgrazing, yet, at remote and inaccessible sites where ecological condition is good. It has to be noted that Platanus orientalis stands are highly threatened by the introduction of the pathogen Ceratocystis fimbriata f.sp. Platani, which has infected a large number of individuals especially near the settlement “Glyki”.

4.2 Quality and importance

This coastal wetland constitutes an important link in the wetlands chain of Western Greece. The natural habitats have greatly been restricted or downgraded as concerns their structure and function. It should be managed properly in a wise and integrated manner, so that restoration of the existing habitats to be achieved and protection from further degradation. The water shrew Neomys anomalus, is of great importance as it is included in the Greek Red Data Book. Stena of Acherontas is an important habitat for Balkan endemics, participating in the diversity of the various habitat types and vegetation dynamics. This area with special charcteristics completes the landscape of the whole site since it is of high ecological significance for the avifauna. The combination of the above-mentioned natural characteristics together with the important archaeological areas within this site (Nekromantio, Acropolis of Efira, etc) combine to give special ecotourist interest to the site as a whole. The following species have been allocated motivation D, for the following reasons: Scabiosa epirota: A Balkan endemic distributed in Greece and Albania, which is also given the IUCN Red Data Book category (R); Cotula coronopifolia: A xerophyte with very limited occurrence currently known in Greece from western Sterea Ellada, Stofilia coastal area, NW coasts of Peloponnisos, only; Lippia nodiflora: A species with very limited distribution range in Greece and which is rare in this site. the anuran amphibians B. bufo, B. viridis, Hyla arborea, the lizards Anguis fragilis, Lacerta trilineata, the snakes Malpolon monspessulanus, N. natrix, N. tessellata, the shrews Crocidura suaveolens, Neomys anomalus, and the weasel Mustela nivalis, are protected by Greek legislation (Presidential Decree 67/1981) and this is the reason why they have been allocated motivation D. The same motivation is given to Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea and Natrix tessellata because of their evaluation by the CORINE-Biotopes Project. The invertebrate species listed in section 3.3 with motivation D is protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981.
