Other Site Characteristics

The marine area is located on the west coast of Greece between the town of Parga and the cave of Agios Thomas in Preveza Prefecture. In Parga bay the substrate is half sandy with fine-grained sand, and half stony and rocky. In front of the bay there is a small rocky islet of approximately 3,000 sqm with precipitous coasts. On the eastern coast of the islets where the substrate is rocky, brown algae predominate especially the characteristic Cystoseiretum communities. The seagrass Cymodocea nodosa forms dense populations near the delta of Acherontas river. The Posidonia beds extend from 1.5 m down to 5 m within the Parga bay and, further on, grow in parallel with the coast line down to 25 m in depth.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is one of the richest localities on the coast of the Ionian Sea, especially the Parga bay. The Mediterranean endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica grows on coarse or thick sand with vertical and horizontal rhizomes. Within the sediment, the rhizomes form a continuous network known as "mats" of Posidonia or Posidonia beds. The Posidonietum oceanicae association is one of the most important marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea. The marine phanerogam Cymodocea forms a dense population near the delta of Acherontas river. The area is characterised by the rich macroalgal flora and vegetation. Many species of marine algae were found. The brown alga Cystoseira crinita forms on the hard substrate the Cystoseiretum crinitae community. The canopy algae of Cystoseira form the greater part of the algal biomass in the upper sublittoral zone.
