Other Site Characteristics

The site streches from Agios Nikolaos Bay, NA Zakynthos, to Marathias Cape, S. Zakynthos. The steep west coast of the island is actually the foot of Brachionas Mount. The coastal line is dominated by vertical seaside cliffs, descending abruptly into the sea, with a vegetation of shrubs and phrygana. The rest of the area consists of rocky hills partly occupied by Pinus halepensis forests, and partly degraded and covered by shrubs or phrygana. Cultivated areas also occur.Falco eleonorae population values are based on LIFE - Nature «Δράσεις προστασίας για τον Μαυροπετρίτη Falco eleonorae στην Ελλάδα» (LIFE03 NAT/GR/000091)

4.2 Quality and importance

This is an important site for species associated with scrub and coastal areas, and passage migrants. The marine area of the site is an important shelter for the monk seal (Monachus monachus). Due to their isolation from the Aegean Sea, these habitats become even more important for the seal. The seaside cliffs are floristically the most interesting part of the island of Zakynthos, hosting a number of rare and unique plant species. Limonium phytosianum and L. zacynthium are local endemics, some other are Greek endemics. Serapias ionica is endemic of the Ionian Isles and is protected under the PD 67/81. Greek and local endemic plant species have been recorded in the site. One of them, the lizard Algyroides moreoticus, is a Greek endemic (restricted to Peloponnisos and the southern Ionian islands). In the area invertebrates have also been recorded. However extended research is needed for them. Keeping in mind that nesting is a critical stage of the biological cycle of Caretta caretta related to the survival of the species, the biological importance of this site is obvious. It should be pointed out, however, that this biological importance is not restricted to the reasons mentioned above. Both the terrestrial and the marine part of the site are characterized by the presence of important habitats (sand-dunes, sandy beaches, rocky coasts, cliffs, Posidonia meadows, etc), and together all these form an ecosystem of high quality. Most of these habitats are characterized by typical Mediterranean types of vegetation and Greek endemics are not rare.
