Other Site Characteristics

The lake Stymfalia is a part of a plateau situated in the southern part of Korinthia Prefecture and surrounded by the mountains of Killini (Zireia), Oligyrtos, Mavrovounio and Garrias. The main substrate of the area is calcareous rock which belongs to the Gavrovo - Tripoli geological zone. The bottom of the lake is covered with recently deposited alluminum. There are many karstic wells surrounding the lake which input fresh water. The surface area of the lake fluctuates seasonally being larger during the winter, while during summer it reduces by large. From time to time the lake is even totally drained. During the droughts of 1988-1990, the lake was completely dry and was used for agricultural purposes by the inhabitants of the nearby villages. The lake covers an area from 25% to about 45% of the surface area of the site depending on the season, but it may even be totally drained. From the rest of the area around the lake occur coniferous forest in the higher altitudes, phrygana broad-leaved formations rocky ecosytems and the remaining is under cultivation.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is very important for resting and nesting birds, especially migratory species. Amongst the various elements of the bird-fauna the threatened ("Vulnerable") heron Ardea purpurea is particularly noteworthy. The area in question is used for fish-farming, and could also be used for scientific, educational and recreational purposes. According to the available data, only some fish, amphibian and reptilian taxa are known to occur in this site.
