Other Site Characteristics

The area is located in the western part of the island. The most proximate towns and villages are Sigri, Eresos, Antissa, Vatoussa, Pterounta, Chidira and Agra. Volcanic rocks are the main geological components, whilst marls, sandy or clayey tuffites as well as schists, conglomerates, slates and limestones also exist N of Sigri and NNW of Antissa (Hecht 1975). The vegetation of the area consists of phrygana (dominant species are Sarcopoterium spinosum, Centaurea spinosa, and Ballota acetabulosa) and of forests of Pinus brutia, Pinus pallasiana ssp. nigra and Quercus macrolepis. At the west part of Lesvos, among Chidira, Parakoilia and Agra there are riparian plant communities, along the banks of intermittently flowing streams, with Rhododendron luteum accompanied by Osmunda regalis, Nerium oleander, Pteridium aquilinum, Juncus sp., Platanus orientalis. These riparian formations of acid soils consitute a habitat type not included in Annex I.

4.2 Quality and importance

The petrified forest of Lesvos is a unique geological monument of enormous scientific interest. By the Presidential Decree 443/1985 it has been declared a protected natural monument and it is also protected by the Barcelona Convention). The surface of the strictly protected area is 51.7 ha. The most important appearances of fossils are located in Pali Alonia (28.7 ha), Chamandroula (4 ha), Akrotirio Sigri (5 ha), northern part of Megalonisi (4 ha) and Lafi (10 ha). From the floristic point of view the fossils belong to the following genera: Pinus, Taxodioxylon, Pinoxylon, Cedroxylon, Pityoxylon, Alnus, Carpinus, Populus, Quercus, Platanus, Laurus, Cinnamomum, Palmoxylon, etc. The existence of the antiquities in Eresos and Antissa as well as the byzantine convent of Ipsilos present great archaeological interest. Regarding the vegetation of the site, the presence of Rhodendron galleries dominated by Rhododendron luteum Sweet as dominant species is considered very important for both Greece and Europe; R. luteum is a deciduous schrub very rare in Europe and in Greece confined to Lesvos.Ruta montana (L.) L.: Very rare plant of the Greek flora. Osmunda regalis L.: This calcifuge fern is rather common in W. Europe but very rare in Greece. Pancratium maritimum L.: It used to be a common species of the sandy shores but its populations are gradually decreasing. Haplophyllum megalanthum: Recently reported (1993) by Hansen and Nielsen as new for Greece. A very rare endemic E. Mediterranean species.Anthemis cretica ssp. cretica is a balkan endemic (it currently includes the species A. panachaica and A. meteorica which are included in the IUCN list of threatened plants as rare and are protected by the Greek Law -Presidential decree 67/81).
