Other Site Characteristics

The area is located in the SE part of the island. Geologically it consists of alluvial deposits (around Geras bay), marbles, schists, pyroxeno-peridotites and olivinites. The marine area covers 49% of the site. Mount Olympos (968 m) is covered by Castanea sativa and Pinus brutia forests whilst its summit is naked and rocky. On mount Olympos there are also arborescent forms of Quercus coccifera mixed with deciduous species such as Ñrunus sp., Acer cempervirum, Crataegus sp., etc. Between Agiasos and Megalochori there is comparatively small area covered by Pinus pallasiana ssp. nigra. Kolpos Geras is an inland bay communicating with the Aegean sea through a narrow channel. Its surface is 42 km2 and its maximum depth 20 m. Saltmarshes are formed alongside the coasts of the bay and especially at Ntipi, Larsos, Evreiaki, Charamida, etc.

4.2 Quality and importance

The bay is important for the migratory birds because of its saltmarshes. Mount Olympos presents a great botanical interest due to the occurence of the local endemic Alyssum lesbiacum and of other important and rare plant species for both Greece and Europe.Regarding the species it should be noted that OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES WITH MOTIVATION D.Plants: Comperia comperiana, Corydalis integra, Fritillaria pontica, Tulipa orphanidea and Silene urvillei are protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81.Orchis laxiflora marked with the letter D is also protected by Greek legislation (Presidential Decree 67/1981).Tordylium hirtocarpum, Erysimum horizontale, Crocus biflorus ssp. nubigena, Allium proponticum, Sideritis sipylea, Galanthus elwesii, Campanula lyrata ssp. lyrata and Microsciadium minutum are rare for both Greece and Europe. In addition, Orchis coriophora is included because Orchidaceae are always attractive and interesting species. All the orchid species listed in the section of "other important species" are protected by the CITES Convention (Annex C). Galanthus elwesii is also protected by the CITES Convention (Appendix II). Part of the site may hold very small populations of two endangered fish species however surveys have not been completed to ascertain habitat conditions and species distributions. Water abstraction may cause these fishes to remain in lower elevations below the current boundaries of the site. River Evergetoulas: This basin is extremely important water system for some very rare endemic species of fish. Here living an endemic species of the Eastern Aegean covered by Directive 92/43, the Barbus pergamonensis (Stoumboudi et al. 2006). the area hosts other fish species, such as Oxynoemacheilus theophilii. It is the only known area of distribution of the two aforementioned species in Europe and the habitats of these species are under intense anthropogenic pressures from water abstraction and interventions in the bed and banks of the river ecosystem.
