Other Site Characteristics

The site is located in the area of Dodekanissos, between the islands of Kos and Rodos. It includes the island of Nisyros and the islet of Strongyli. Strongyli islet, is actually an active volkano, the crater of which is surrounded by primary vegetation. The island of Nisyros is characterized by pure Quercus forests and phrygana and in the east part of the island there are extensive sand dunes. There are also inland cliffs and small screes and springs which are surrounded by water related vegetation. Small villages of traditional architecture and, not extended, cultivations all around, are dispersed all over the island. In the center of Nisyros, there is an active volcano, the crater of which is surrounded by virgin natural areas, similar to Strongyli. The submarine region of Nisyros, extending from Kos in the north to Tilos in the south, constitutes a large basin-tectonic graben of 600m average depth. This basin is interrupted by a complex volcanic group and small intra-volcanic basins with less than 350m depth. The volcanic formations are found at 680m depth (Avyssos in the Eastern Kos Basin) and at the eastern base of the Strongyli volcanic cone up to 700 m of altitude (rhyolitic domes of Prophitis Ilias on Nisyros) creating a total volcanic relief of more than 1400 m (Nomikou et al. 2013; and references therein). This fully marine site extends 1nm about the coasts of the volcanic islands Nisyros, Pachia, Pergoussa, Yali and Strongyli.

4.2 Quality and importance

The quality and importance of the site result from the following elements:1) The is of great aesthetic value due to the presence of the two active volcanoes, as well as because of its virgin vegetation. 2) There are rare and endemic species of plants and animals. 3) There are areas of great archaeological interest. 4) The human impact is rather restricted. 5) The broader marine area between the islands Kos and Tilos is very important for tuna and swordfish fishing.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES IN 3.3 WITH MOTIVATION D 1) For the plant species Anthemis scopulorum and Arenaria aegaea, the site is the eastern limit of their distribution. Cynara cornigera is an east-mediterranean species, with interesting distribution in the Aegean area, also occurring in Southern Greece, in Crete and in the Aegean and out of Greece only in Cyprus; the site is the eastern limit of its distribution and one of only 100 or less sites this species occurs in the EC.Brassica cretica ssp. aegaea is a chasmophyte with distribution in Greece, SW Anatolia, Mt Carmel. The later species is also protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81). The species Teucrium brevifolium is included in the IUCN Red Data List, characterized as “Rare” in Greece (1993) and in the World (1993).The site includes adequate habitats (i.e. oak forests that support a good population of Callimorpha quadripunctaria (Annex II))Recent geological explorations revealed the presence of underwater hydrothermal vents and structures, confirming the site’s representativity as Habitat Type 1180 (Submarine structures made by leaking gases). The outcrops of volcanic rocks at the sea bottom are covered by heavy encrustations or by biogenic and concreted layers (Nomikou et al. 2013). The site also comprises extended detritic and muddy sediments (Habitat Type 1110), shallow and deep reefs (Habitat Type 1170) and Posidonia oceanica meadows (Habitat Type 1120). Though little known, the marine biodiversity of this area is expected to be of significant scientific interest as suggested by records of deep-water antipatharians, some of which carrying elasmobranch egg cases.
