Other Site Characteristics

The site includes the mountain Agios Ilias with its surrounding area (which is located in the SE part of the island of Santorini) and two small islands (Nea Kameni and Palaia Kameni) located west of Santorini. The mountain Agios Ilias is the only area of Santorini island that is not covered by the products of volcanic eruption; its main geological components are limestones. There are screes in the area and an homonymous monastery is built at the top of the mountain; the neighbouring NE slope, has been planted with pine-trees, which are not in a good condition (they are sickly). At the foot of the mountain, near the small villages Kamari, Emporeio and Perissa, there are vineyards, while the rest of the mountain is covered by typical aegean phrygana. In the area of Kamari village there is a cave with endemic invertebrates. The ancient Thira is also located in this part of the site, at the top of a hill north of Perissa. The two small islands were created in the recent past by the volcanic eruption. Actually, their surface constitutes of barren fields covered by lava, which, not being capable of developing permanent vascular vegetation yet, are mainly characterized by the presence of primary vegetation. The shores constitute of very steep cliffs, with almost vertical slopes adjacent to the sea. The marine area surrounding the islets has a hard seabed and is characterized by the presence of hot springs and vapour columns.8140 describes Aegean Mediterranean screes of low altitude with predominantly annual plants and with some perennials, such as Clematis cirrhosa.

4.2 Quality and importance

The quality and the importance of the site consist in the following elements: 1) It is of great archeological value due to the existence of the ancient town of Thira. 2) The mountain Agios Ilias assembles all the old elements of the island of Santorini (floristic, faunistic and geolological). So, it plays a very important role in species’ dispersion, (especially of the calciphilous ones) to the rest of the island. 3) There are subfossils of terrestrial molluscs. 4) There is a cave with endemic invertebrates; the isopod Schizidium beroni is endemic to the cave. 5) In the two small islands, colonization, although it has already started and reached at a certain degree, is still an evolving process. So, the monitoring and the study of this natural “experiment” of colonization are of great scientific interest. OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES IN 3.3 WITH MOTIVATION D: The later species is also important for its distribution in the Aegean. Plants: The species Hymenonema graecum, Ranunculus creticus are protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81).
