Other Site Characteristics

The area is located at the central part of Paros (Moni Christou), the central island of the Cyclades (Aegean sea). The site is characterised by a little river and rocky lands which are covered by phryganas (with Genista acanthoclada and Thymus capitatus), garrigue-like scenery with Quercus coccifera and a dense mid-elevation matorral of Juniperus phoenicea. There is also riparian vegetation with common perrenials or annuals (the vegetation of a constantly flowing mediterranean river with gravel bed, usually pebbles, a habitat type not included in Annex I). There are cultivations, vineyards and olive trees which are property of the Church.

4.2 Quality and importance

The ecological quality and importance of the site consist in a) the presence of a great population of the rare butterfly Callimorpha quadripunctaria near the river, a rare phenomenon in Greece (the butterfly forest in Rhodos is another such example); and b) its variety of natural and semi-natural habitat types (phryganas, matorral, garrigues and olive trees). Its biodiversity is expected to be of great interest, but further investigation is needed, since only few species of plants, amphibians, reptiles and gastropods have been described up to now.
