Other Site Characteristics

The site is located at the north and eastern part of Tinos island. It is an area with no tourism activities. The small mountain (600 m) has adequate standing and also running water (intermittent streams) during the cold season. Flanking the streams there is typical water fringed vegetation, with Nerio-Tamaricetea and Platanus orientalis. The site also includes areas with broadleaved deciduous woodland with Quercus macrolepis, maquis and phrygana. The marine part of the site with the bay Livada and rocky coasts is also important, with Posidonia sea beds. Within the site there are also few uninhabited islets.

4.2 Quality and importance

This site includes the most undisturbed area of the island of Tinos. It supports a number of habitats at a good to excellent conservation status and, most importantly, inland water bodies with their typical vegetation, not often encounterd in the Aegean. The marine ecosystems with posidonia beds are also important. Within the area there's a significant Eleonora's Falcon colony, numbering almost 400 pairs, while in the mainland Bonelli's Eagles and Peregrine Falcons are also found in good numbers. Furthermore, Shags are nesting in the rocky coasts.
