Other Site Characteristics

The mountainous area with well-preserved fir-beech forests, especially the Čorkova uvala primeval forest. It is world famous for its complex of karstic lakes with numerous high waterfalls. Meadows and pastures are numerous in southern part of the area (Homoljačko polje, Brezovac and Babin potok). This is the important nesting area of Ural Owl, Tegmalm’s Owl, Three-toed Woodpecker and White-backed Woodpecker. Under protection: National Park Plitvice Lakes. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are limestone and dolomite (lower cretaceous - K1), limestone and dolomite (lower jurassic-J1), fatlayered limestone and dolomite (middle jurassic - J2), limestones and dolomites (upper jurassic - J3), deluvial-proluvial sediments (a-dprQ2) and dolomite (upper noricum, ret - T22-3). Soils: brown soil on limestone, rendzina soils on dolomite and limestone, loessivized and typical deep terra rossa. Presence of calcareous sinter barriers; numerous of speleological objects and other karst features.

4.2 Quality and importance

- The area is protected as national park and proclaimed the UNESCO World Heritage site - Information on birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys - SPA Plitvička jezera represents important site for forest hole-nesting species: Aegolius funereus (5% of national population), Glaucidium passerinum (5,3%), Strix uralensis (10 %), Dendrocopos leucotos (4,2%) and Picoides tridactylus (10%). Here was registered the highest density of Strix uralensis in Croatia, in old not managed forests - Karst poljes of the area hold breeding Crex crex (8% of national population), Circus pygargus (1,7%) and occasional breeding Asio flammeus
