Other Site Characteristics

The site includes inshore waters of Istria with bays, suitable for fish-eating seabirds. Islets and coastal cliffs (as in National Park Brijuni) are nesting area for Shags while coastal waters represent wintering habitats for Red-Throated and Arctic Loon as well as for the Sandwich Tern. The site includes Special reserve in the sea Limski kanal, National Park Brijuni and partly: Significant landscape Limski kanal, Significant landscape Rovinjski otoci i priobalno područje, paleontological Special reserve Datule Barbariga, Significant landscape Donji Kamenjak i Medulinski arhipelag. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht - K21-6), limestone and dolomite (lower cretaceous - K1), limestones and dolomites (upper jurassic - J3), terra rossa (tsQ2) (Holocene - Q2), alluvial sediments (b-aQ2). Soils: loessivized and typical deep terra rossa, shallow and medium deep terra rossa, brown soil on limestone, eutric brown soil. This area is part of the Adriatic carbonate platform from the time when the mesozoic and tertiary deposits have become surface on which began an exogenous processes of shaping and process of karstification; western Istrian anticline, where the best developed are plateau; there are numerous cracks, karrens, sinkholes, bays and speleological objects. Predominate gentle slopes that prevent erosion of soil which leads to accumulation of terra rossa; the coast is formed by positive movements of sea level that started and still going on since the last glacial. After glaciation, there is a transgression of the sea level and Brijuni, Limski bay and other forms are formed.

4.2 Quality and importance

- Information on birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys (data provided by the Institute staff and their field-work associates) - The site includes National Park Brijuni, with the most important breeding sites of Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii in the SPA; - SPA Akvatorij zapadne Istre holds 9,4% of national population of Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii - SPA Akvatorij zapadne Istre is one of the two important wintering sites in Croatia for Gavia stellata (10% of national wintering population); one of the three for Gavia arctica (5% of national wintering population) and one of the three for Sterna sandwicensis (12% of national wintering population)
