  • Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics

The area comprises of the Island of Hvar, the eastern half of the Island of Korčula and Pelješac peninsula as well as the islets between the Island of Korčula and Pelješac peninsula. All types of Mediterranean habitats (open and forest habitats) are present in the area. Rocky habitats with cliffs are well developed at Pelješac. The area holds the most important Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) population in Croatia. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht - K21-6), rimestone and dolomite (lower cretaceous - K1), liburnian sediments, foraminiferal limestones and transitional sediments (upper paleocene, lower and middle eocene - Pc, E1, 2), flysch sediments (middle and upper eocene - E2, 3). Soils: brown soil on limestone, anthropogenic soil on karst, limestone and dolomite black soil, rendzina soils on dolomite and limestone. Current form of the islands and peninsula were created after the transgression of the sea after the last glaciation; presence of process of abrasion.

4.2 Quality and importance

- Information on birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys (data provided by the Institute staff and their field-work associates) - SPA Srednjedalmatinski otoci i Pelješac holds the most important Caprimulgus europaeus population in Croatia (11% of national population) - SPA Srednjedalmatinski otoci i Pelješac is one of the three breeding sites for Larus audouinii in Croatia - it is estimated that it contains 13% of national population - SPA Srednjedalmatinski otoci i Pelješac holds 6% of national population of Circaetus gallicus and 4% of Hippolais olivetorum - SPA Srednjedalmatinski otoci i Pelješac is a part of the migration corridor for Pernis apivorus (> 1000 birds) and Grus grus (> 3000 birds) passing through the Adriatic Sea from Gargano Peninsula in Italy to Palagruža Island (the most forward island of Croatia) in the SPA Pučinski otoci, continuing over Lastovo Archipelago, Pelješac Peninsula and Rilić Mountain on the coast. Birds rarely land on islands, only during night or unfavourable weather
