Other Site Characteristics

Nature park situated in the north-west part of Croatia, alongside the Slovenian border. It is represented by very different types of landscape: karst, steep mountain ridges, mild hills, woodland and arable land. Traditional life-style and cultivating the land made a typical mosaic landscape where settlements interweave with fields, grassland, pasture grounds and woods. The site is also represented by a rich cultural landscape, with several important archaeological finding sites. According to geotectonic structure, this area is on the border of so called Dinaric carbonate platform and Inner Dinarides, in other words of the Dinarides, the Panonian basin and the Alps. This is why natural and geographic features of Dinaric karst terrain and karst plateaus interweave with the Pannonian plain with mild terraces and rivers together with sub-Alpine countryside with harsh ridges and crags. The area of the Park is almost exclusively built of sedimentary rocks formed in prehistoric seas Tethysu and Paretethysu. Magmatic rocks appear on a small area between Plešivica and Samobor. The area of Žumberak and the Samoborsko gorje has resulted from geological processes which can be traced according to sediment layers from the paleozoic until today, in other words from those formed more than 250 million years ago to rocks which are forming even today. The largest area of terrain is covered with carbonates from the trias (especially dolomites). The jurassic is mostly represented in limestone, the cretanceous in limestone and flysch and the tertiary is rich in different classical facieses which are the result of strong tectonic activity with common changes in the surroundings of sedimentation. Clays, sand, gravel, gypsum and younger alluvial sediment of local rivers and stream belong to the quarternary period. Such formation causes the karst which covers even 90% of the territory of the Park with numerous karstic shapes like sink-holes, hollows and blind valleys. Abysses and short underground streams are common, especially in the western part of the Park. Apart from karstic shapes on the surface of Žumberak and the part of the Samoborsko gorje, karstic features are highlighted by numerous underground shapes like caves and holes. The Park is extremely rich in water springs. Basic data for 847 water springs have been collected until present day.

4.2 Quality and importance

- site represents isolated karst area important for 8310 Caves not open to public; site is important for aquatic and terrestrial underground endemic taxa: Monolistra (T.) racovitzai pseudoberica, Troglohyphantes sketi, Chthonius sp. nov., Neobisium speleum ssp.nov., Mesostalita sp. nov., Machaerites curvistylus, Niphargus likanum, Chthonius jalzici, Bathyscimorphus byssinus uskokensis, Niphargus stygius, Roncus stussineri, Dina sp., Bathyscimorphus byssinus uskokensis, Troglorhynchus sp., Anophthalmus sp., Parapropus sericeus intermedius, Iglica (I.) langhofferi, Lithobius sp. nov., Roncus italicus, Niphargus stygius novomestanus, Aphaobius sp.nov., Dendrocoelum cfr. spelaeum, Roncus sp. nov.; one type locality for species Machaerites curvistylus - important site for Leptodirus hochenwartii - this population is completely isolated from others and with obvious different morphological characteristics; species is assessed as rare at the area of whole site but is more common at specific localities - important Myotis myotis nursery in the continental biogeographical region in Croatia - important Rhinolophus ferrumequinum nursery and hibernaculum - Pušina jama: internationally important underground site for Rhinolophus hipposideros - the area is considered to support significant presence of butterfly species: Leptidea morsei, Euphydryas maturna and Euphydryas aurinia - mosaic habitat types of this area are important for species Euplagia quadripunctaria - important site for saproxylic beetles Morimus funereus, Lucanus cervus and Osmoderma barnabita; also it represents one of recent findings of rare species in Croatia Osmoderma barnabita - due to do the large number of well conserved populations, this site is of great importance for the conservation of Austropotamobius torrentium in Croatia, especially Continental Biogeographical region - because of the large population of Cordulegaster heros, the site is of importance for the conservation of this species in the Continental Biogeographical Region - the area is considered to support significant presence of amphibian species Bombina variegata and Triturus carnifex - important site for Lutra lutra - important site for Himantoglossum adriaticum - one of only two sites in Croatia for habitat type 7220; over 200 petrifying springs are present on site - important site for habitat type 6510 - one of four important sites for habitat type 6520 in Croatia - brooks in the site are important for Barbus balcanicus and Cottus gobio - important site for 9110, As Luzulo-Fagetum, which is developed on steep slopes on silicate supstrate. There is different information on area and distribution of individual forest habitat types of Žumberak-Samoborsko gorje from Hrvatske šume d.o.o. Database of Hrvatske šume d.o.o. does not include complete information on private forests. - important site for 91K0, As Hacquetio-Fagetum; Cover is based on the Habitats map of NP Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje - important site for 91L0; As Epimedio-Carpinetum betuli; Cover is based on the Habitats map of NP Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje - important site for 91M0; cover was taken from Hrvatske šume database, this HT was not mapped in the Habitat map of NP Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje - important site for 9260; As Querco-Castanetum sativae; Cover is based on the Habitats map of NP Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje - important site for European dry heaths - important site for habitat type 6210* - The only known site with Mannia triandra in Croatia. Mannia triandra has been found on two localities within the site.
