4.1 General site character

Other Site Characteristics

Ličko polje is a complex of karst fields in Lika region with extensive wet and dry grasslands, flooded lowlands, rivers and streams by the east site of Mt. Velebit on 565-590 m altitude. It is elongated in the northwest-southeast direction (dinaric direction) and it consists of several small karst fields (Lipovo polje, Kosinjsko polje, Pazariško polje, Brezovo polje, Gospićko polje, Perušićko polje, Smiljansko polje, Oteško polje etc). Through the field flows river Lika that springs in the south part of the site from a number of small springs. It collects waters from a number of tributaries (e.g. Jadova, Bogdanica, Otešica) before it’s natural sink hole Markov ponor in karst field Lipovo polje near settlement Donji Kosinj. Natural hydrology of Lika River is changed with building of hydropower plant Kosinj with large accumulation lake as well as with diversion of its waters towards hydropower plant Senj as a result of which only small part of its waters reaches natural sinkholes in Lipovo polje.

4.2 Quality and importance

- only site for stenoendemic species Delminichthys jadovensis; it inabits the Jadova river and some tributaries as Kovačica nad Japoga; there are also records from the stream Balatin (in some literature named as Balotin); Jadova completely dries out during the summer period so species probably survives the drought period in underground waters and small refuge ponds - only site for C. jadovaensis; for now it has only been recorded in the Jadova river; Jadova completely dries out during the summer period so species probably survives the drought period in underground waters and small refuge ponds - important site for Triturus carnifex situated on margins of one part of disjunctive areal - the area is considered to support a significant presence of Lutra lutra - important site for Scilla litardierei - important site for butterfly species Euphydryas aurinia - site with several localities of Klasea lycopifolia, with estimated cover-abundance of 1-2 according to the extended Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale - important site for habitat type 6510 - site with occurence of habitat type 6410 - important site for 8310 - Ledenica kod Pećinskog vrha is type locality for vulnerable species Astagobius angustatus deelemani known only from itˈs type locality; Vranovinski ponor is type locality for species Haasia stenopodium; Rogić špilja is type locality for Neobisium elegans; - important site for Congeria kusceri, the only living underground bivalve in the world – Markov ponor and Dankov ponor represent two of six known living colonies, also population of Congeria in Markov ponor na Dankov ponor belong to newly described species Congeria jalzici found from only three localities in Lika region - Markov ponor represents important site for Leptodirus hochenwartii
